    I finish off the honing with a 12000 Naniwa speciality stone and a plain cow hide strop. I use a layer of tape on the spine to prevent scratches and also to keep the edge/spine ratio constant so the edge angle changes only very slowly after each hone.

    Tempering at 315C sound high to me, I would temper at 200C both times to get higher hardness.

    Yes it dead simple, just heat it to the right temperature, if its not hot enough, it won't get hard, if it gets too hot, the blade can become brittle and you get excessive surface decarburisation.

    You need to know how long to hold the hardening…

    You can heat treat O1 steel with just a blow torch and 3 fire bricks and some veg oil from a supermarket provided the blade is thin and short, up to 3mm thick and 75mm long, any thicker or longer and it doesn't get hot enough.
