Very nice shape Jim but can mine have a FFG and no swedge please

  • I suppose so long as you renew it it's permanent. You have the right to have it, permanently. If someone lets it lapse and then wants back in, then they can. They have the right to have it at any time (I'm making this up as I go along btw). To be honest, it hadn't occurred to any of us so thanks for bringing it up.

  • Making micarta more grippy?

    packrat - - How do I...?

    Post

Quote from Paul W: “The micarta grips on all the ESEE knives that i have handled are extremely coarse & grippy, anyone know how they get that finish? ” I love ESEE micarta. It's quite similar to some stuff I've made by accident, and Amir's pink stuff, and I think the contributory factors have been coarseness or perhaps slightly less absorptiveness of the cloth, and/or not enough resin. And/or resin going off too quickly before it's soaked in properly. I love that the ESEE grips pick up oil, swea…

Quote from xellos99: “ So that is my suggestion is next time buy wood from @packrat ” Small point of order there my friend, I'm not saying you said you did but for the sake of transparency, you didn't actually buy wood from me, I gave it to you, and when I offered to sell you the next piece you declined as it was too expensive for you. No worries, just wanted to be clear.

Quote from The Lord Flashheart: “If you have a steady hand you might try chequering it, failing that get @packrat to make you some Micarta with a touch less resin than usual and a coarse cloth. He made some Red linen micarta for me that has a sort of furry and very grippy texture when wet with something like a velvety feel in the hand. ” Have you en-knifed that stuff yet Amir? I really want to see how it turns out.

Damn that's some seriously scary stuff. I hope she's recovering well. Was it a particularly noxious thing she was cutting, or just some random bacterium from something? Did they identify it?

  • Quote from UK_EDC: “£15 is not a lot, I understand completely where you are coming from. But if I were a new maker or upcoming I may be hesitant. Just purely out of fear of stigma or thinking I'm giving myself a "what's in it for me!" Representation. ” My fear on BB when I was considering the Maker equivalent over there was that people might laugh at the idea I considered myself a maker

  • Quote from UK_EDC: “It seems to me this rule could have been discussed publicly before hand, and had maker feedback. They are the true backbone of the community and also some of the most active. Subscription should be made more noticeable on the home page. To be honest I didn't really know about paid subscription levels for quite a while after joining. Maybe there are fellow members that are the same as me. I could honestly see why I would be miffed if something could affect my career (don't mea…

  • Quote from CragMasterCraig: “ I've actually re-read the rule in post 2 and it doesn't really make sense. It says makers can not post in "non-sales" areas. This means a maker could post knives for sale in the sales thread and be OK? I don't think it's meant to read like that but it does. ” Of course makers can post in the sales threads, if they pay the Maker sub...

  • @LX_Emergency It's very hard to take seriously the notion that you aren't advertising when you are a maker who is preparing for a trade show!

  • Quote from LX_Emergency: “I'll be blunt....I think it's a simplistic and therefore dumb rule. One that's being made as a response to something that's real. But the rule is not nuanced enough to take into account those situations where it was probably not a problem. ” Once you get to nitty gritty tiny details of rules, it gets bloody complicated and so we have tried to make things a little flexible and open to interpretation. We'll think about how we might be able to alter the rule to allow posts…

  • I've fixed the original post. It's bloody Photobucket again.

  • Quote from Jimmypie: “ However , showcasing ones work .. Should that carry a levy ? Maybe , maybe not , if Tony Bose joined the forum and put a how to make a knife guide up and used one of his to show us ,would we delete it because he is a knifemaker so by default must be advertising ? ” This is so difficult, really, the amount of discussion that goes on behind the scenes is incredible. And we don't get it right all the time. Jim you raise a good point but I can't help feeling that if Tony Bose …

  • You may notice that your browser now shows https://edgematters.uk rather than http://edgematters.uk (there's an extra "s" after "http"). From now on, if you enter (or click on a link that has) http (without the "s" at the end) it will (silently and instantly -- you don't need to do anything) redirect you to the https version. image-proxy But what's the difference? Pull up a chair, I'll tell you. HTTP is a fundamentally insecure protocol. Information sent between our server and your browser is no…

  • Nor are we and we've already pissed one person off with it. Anyone got any bright ideas about how to tell whether someone is making money from the knives they make? How do you define maker/hobbyist/amateur etc?

  • That would be a shame.

  • Sorry Alexander but as you are a maker it seems only fair that you should pay to advertise, like other makers. We're not lining our own pockets with EM's income, it all goes back into the forum & community. £20 (£5 for your 440c base sub + £15 Maker upgrade = £20) works out at just over 5 pence per day.

It sounds like it could be the backlight. If you look reeeeealllly close and in the right light, can you see the image? I use a Dell 27 inch IPS plugged in to my Macbook but it's getting a little long in the tooth. My desktop drives the same 27" and a 21" but it's rarely switched on as I use the MB most of the time. So, not terribly helpful I'm afraid John. Would be interested to see what you decide for in the end though.

Quote from Arclightuk1972: “Is the pits particularly strong. Does that transfer to the Spyderco pits ” I believe that it is. I use mine every day and there are zero signs of any play. It's just superb. The Spyderco one doesn't feel as strong. Not least because of the bloody great hole in the blade, which although everyone says Nah it'd never break, still makes me wince a little.

  • Yuck yuck yuck. For me the maker or manufacturer is a huuuge part of whether I like a knife or brand, and in Cold Steel's case, as in that of Mike $nody and other [edit] 'people' of the same ilk, I'd not have one of their knives if you gave it to me (other than perhaps to sell it ).

  • The server had another hissy fit this morning about 6:45. It was back by about 9:20. Apparently the vole family ejected from the cooling duct came back with a load of woodland mates who forcefully occupied the data centre and in the fracas a security guard was seriously nibbled. The data centre was put into lockdown and all the power was cut, then the Met's Small Mammal Unit stormed the building and the voles and their little woodland cohorts were apprehended before power was finally restored. P…
