  • Thanks gm! Yeah I figured I'd be doing it again jim but I thought the smoother I get it now while it's soft, the less rubbing I've gotta do when it's hard. I dunno if that's true but there's not much else I can do till I get my cooker built

  • Finally got my holes drilled! made my bevel a bit shiney today too. gone up to 1200 wet n dry, gonna do 1500 and 2000 when i get some and leave it at that. all by hand im aching and chopped up but totally worth it i recon! image-proxy

  • No I just saw a link to your Instagram on a thread I was reading on here. I don't actually have it my self never even been on it till the other day. I always just thought it's was for half naked hoes to feed their egos with lol n if I wanted to see them, well there's other sites for that ;). How long does it take to get through it on average? I'm still having no luck, may attempt to sharpen my bit, need to watch a YouTube vid on how to do it firsth haha. I've learned loads of stuff since startin…

  • Thanks mr jimmy. I'll try going slower. Saw your instagram the other day just before I was about to take the dogs out for a walk, was sat there for like an hour didn't even realise till the German shepherd started barking at me haha some pretty stuff you've made on there!

  • Anyone got any advice for drilling the holes for the handle. My smallest metal drill bit is 4mm I've been stood for like 15 minutes just drilling with my 18v drill and it doesn't even look like it's touched it, the pumchnput a bigger hole in than the drill has done so far. I've seen people on YouTube do it with those hand crank drills though so surely this should get through it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • yeah deffinatly hold some memories. i cant wait to start using it on camp trips n stuff! ive just found that "forged in fire" series and that has me scared for the quenching stage, loads of em have cracked their blades there! and thanks for the tip on the scales ill drop him a message on pay day! done a bit of draw filing (i think thats what its called) to get rid of the nasty file lines, made her a bit shinier, just had one little slip one side of the knife with the bevel, thats a bit upsetting…

  • Thank you sir :). Think my arms gonna be aching tomorrow now though!

  • Quote from GMballistic: “Quote from brettorious: “Yeah I've got a little vice that should do the job. Just wondering if my little 18v drill is gonna get through it, hopefully it will eventually lol ” That's good then. I had nightmare visions of you trying to hold it with your hand or something! Lol. You may already know this but the trick is to firstly centre punch the centre of the hole/place you want to drill which will give the drill bit a nice place to catch onto. Then starting with a small …

  • Introducing the Bodge It "N" Scarper bevel JIG. Patent pending. Made from :- - 2 mouldy bits of MDF - Mouldy bit of old fence post - 1 security fencing post - 1 old file - 2 tie wraps - some screws image-proxy image-proxy image-proxy image-proxy image-proxy image-proxy image-proxy

  • Yeah I've got a little vice that should do the job. Just wondering if my little 18v drill is gonna get through it, hopefully it will eventually lol

  • Yeah I need to get my self a dremel, they look super handy. Throwing my bevel jig together today and hopefully getting a bevel put on the thing. Used some nail varnish to mark my centre line haha. Then I've gotta drill the handle for the pins, not looking forward to that, never drilled metal with a hand drill before, and not with a pillar drill since school! Gonna attempt to make this thing to do the heat treat part, then just the oven for balancing. m.youtube.com/watch?v=hHD10DjxM1g

  • yeah I'd definitely be murdered haha I was just chuckling to my self when I saw it and it crossed my mind. Just had a look on eBay, pretty cheap isn't it. I like how that kernite stuff looks but I'm defiantly going for a nice chunk of wood for my first since I've never worked with that kernite resin stuff, I'm gonna hazzard a guess that it bungs up your files something rotten. Plus I love to see wood getting shinier and shinier the more you work it and polish it, guess you don't get that from re…

  • Done a little bit more shaping and tidying today with the hand files, and put me stickers on ready for beveling. image-proxy image-proxy on another note. im sure she wont notice if i shave just one edge off of this for my knife handel will she? its some nice wood haha. image-proxy

  • Thank you :). yeah it is. enjoying it though i didnt think id get this far to be honest, i expected screwing it up wiith the first cut lol. but yeah deffo gotta use what youve got and bodge stuff together to get the job done, thats one of the fun parts!

  • thats how it is. its alright if you keep an eye on it. keeps life interesting for sure. just poke it back on with a bit of metal. to be fair thats why i was going to wait till i got my files to tidy the edges up, but i just couldnt wait. i know super technical aint i haha. yeh ill get a dremel someday after ive got my files maybe. gonna knock a little jig up for the bevel too to make sure im keeping the same angle all the way along.

  • haha i know right, im spoilt. ive been dreaming of like a table router that would be so handy for the inner curvy bits. image-proxy This old girl keeps you on your toes, if youre not paying attention she throws the belt off at your face haha

  • Thanks mr jimmy

  • So ive managed to do a bit more shaping with an awful bench grinder. want attatched to anything, no guards on it, no rests and i decided to pull a few parts off of it to make it more usable. anyway i thing its a half decent bit of shaping but man what i wouldnt give for a flat surface to steady the blade while i worked, its almost as if my mums dining room isnt a suitable place for knife making?? weird. anyways, will finish it off with some ink and files when i get em so the edges arent as wobbl…

  • Thank you Mel, it was just one of those things i was wondering about, like for getting it exactly the same as the template is a useful thing to know. Quite interesting really. I think I'm going to enjoy this filing down stage a lot since it's gonna be a much slower proscess than blasting through with the angle grinder (even though it's gonna me more exhausting!) Thanks jimmy yeah I have a few copies of the template printed off so plan was to cut it out again exactly the same but cut the bevel pa…

  • Haha it wouldn't platinum, I'd have been stabbed with me own knife! Lol. Thanks jimmy, will keep that in mind. Pritt-stick actually held my template on super well, was expecting the glue just melting and it sliding off lol

  • Just googled trigonometry, don't like it. Gonna eye stuff. Thanks though

  • only one of those I've seen is that Micheal chitilu that guy is funny. He laughs in the face of health and safety lol

  • Yeah I tend to over complicate everything to the max lol I'll probably end up doing that too. I should have listened in school lol. I've seen a few YouTube videos yeah, people make it look effortless I was nackered lol. Thanks for the suggestions I'll take a look at them

  • ''Tis indeed good advice, for finding high spots too. Thanks you. The thing I was wondering though is (it's hard for me to put into words, I need pictures or a thing to point at! Lol). Say you've got a 40mm wide blade and lets say it's 5mm thick steel and you want the bevel to go up half way, so 20mm. How would you work out the angle you needed to get the desired size bevel? And like if you wanted the bevel to go up 30mm the angle would need to be different again or if the thickness was differen…

  • Haha no she did not. Looks like a did a good job cleaning cause she's not noticed. I kept looking round and noticing more layers of metal dust lol I'm pretty sure it's cleaner than when I started no. Phew.

  • - Thanks! Yeah I'll defiantly burn a fair few calories doing it! I knew the metal was tough but I still wasn't ready for it eating my discs up like it did! Lol enjoyable proscess though. Most stressful part was looking at the clock thinking am I gonna have time to get this cleaned up before the mother gets home haha, managed that too though!

  • Hey all been a while since i was here, but ive finally gotten round to starting making my first knife! Not gonna lie, things went wrong from the get go. firstly it was raining (personal problems but back at my mums house). so, i waited for her to go out to work and got to work in the dining room.... yeah.... first issue, hacksaw blade snapped immediately, didn't have any more haha. so out came the angle grinder. the hacksaw snapping was actually a blessing in disguise i think because i was sweat…

  • yeah i thought it looked thick for 3mm. s'all good i could use the exercise! thank you platinum, im gonna need it! just a note, if you use imgur to get picture links, apparently you can set it to private and it'll still show up on forums via the links. wouldn't recommend posting anything publicly on there, those imgurians are like a hive mind of angry prepubescent virgins lol.

  • new shiney peice of metal arrived today. even saved me a hacksaw cut! Thank you jimmy! image-proxy

yeah, i was wondering about heat treat for later down the line as well. ive just been crossing bridges as i come to them lol. i did see on here someone had made a little forge thing out of a car wheel, so it might be bye bye spare wheel when it comes to heat treat time lol
