The blade has been finished to a 60 grit at my request as I have plans for it, despite the worry that peanut butter will clog it Princess number two is a slender minx in D3 with a natural micarta handle left rough for easy grip when wet, it was going to be an outdoors knife for my brother 's family for their camping holiday at the end of M…

  • Pocket clip on EDC or not

depends is a default state I've had knives pulled out of my pocket because the clip caught and I didn't notice until I couldn't find the knife. I found it in the chair still clipped to cushion. Other clips have been uncomfortable to work with, one other tore a trouser pocket. I've also had slip pouches with clips that let you house an unclipped penknife. The knives have fallen out of the pouch or the pouch has come loose and fallen off. Sometimes the grip is enhanced by a good clip, sometimes ru…

  • @Kernelpanic Almost every kid I knew when I was young (about 5000 years ago at last count) cut themselves on SAKs when the backspring was tested by the force applied as we tried to push through knots in the wood. When the blade eventually made it through the release of pressure caused the blade to flick close on our fingers. One reason why the saying " a sharp blade is safer than a blunt one" developed, I suspect. The soft steel of the SAK is easy to sharpen and it might help your son to learn t…

all good ideas but will he spend any time making more knives? If it's a tool to get back into more like full time making there are financial downsides. If the engineering job is a bitch then chill out and earn a crust as a maker again. If this is the case a good up to date website will be a help

  • looks a treat, certainly nicer than g10. What about seeing it if you drop it, comparative weight, balance etc?

  • Had a bit of a read up about stone graders so I've ordered one and a knife jig and see what happens (SWMBO insisted, who am I to disagree?) Can still ship it on to nephew if I still don't like

  • Quote from Jimmypie: “i don't actually recall using the clamp but free handing straight off the rail , but it was a hazy night I'm not sure how the 10" version will be better if the guide clamp and wheel grit are the same though Stone aside once again , how was the rest of the unit ? ” Limited. Not variable speed, plastic set angle guide rather than including a compass and the extras kill it at a price.

  • Quote from Jimmypie: “Quote from banksy: “This is what happens when you ignore banksy's advice I wonder if you could improve the wheel with a stone grader? ” what was your advice ? @fluffy it's less than 24hours old , if you don't think it's fit for purpose you could send it back ? Real shame it hasn't worked out though , looking across the board at the all the clones do you think it'll be the same ? ” I'd go for the 10" version but they are £199 and the tool kit is either an extra £19 for one k…

  • Quote from bonzodog: “Quote from fluffy: “ ” Sums up my mantra, buy cheap buy twice. ” My mantra is try it out and if you don't like give it away. If you do like then get the proper one (sometimes) Otherwise it's easy to buy expensive tat.

  • Quote from banksy: “This is what happens when you ignore banksy's advice I wonder if you could improve the wheel with a stone grader? ” You then have a smaller wheel? I can see a stone grader roughening a 1000 grit stone but smoothing a 220 grit? I would opt for a 10" version anyway

  • The supplied knife/tool clamp is ridiculously limited. If I was to use it with and decent knife I'd add a soft leather wrap. The 8" wheel is quite coarse and while the whole package would work with fairly large straight edges you would need to invest in other sharpening clamps to be able to shape tips. This is where part of the problem lies: what extras can you buy that would fit? If you invested in the short and long knife clamps from Tormek would they fit the F bar? If not what you have left i…
